Motivated Reasoning in an Explore‐Exploit Task

چکیده
Abstract The current research investigates how prior preferences affect causal learning. Participants were tasked with repeatedly choosing policies (e.g., increase vs. decrease border security funding) in order to maximize the economic output of an imaginary country and inferred influence on economy. task was challenging ambiguous, allowing participants interpret relations between economy multiple ways. In three studies, we found evidence motivated reasoning despite financial incentives for accuracy. For example, who believed that funding should be increased more likely conclude increasing actually caused a better task. Study 2, hypothesized having neutral preferring neither nor decreased spending security) would lead accurate assessments overall, compared strong initial preference; however, did not find such effect. 3, tested whether providing possible functional forms policy takes some time work or initially has negative but eventually positive influence) smaller little this This advances field learning by studying role preferences, doing so, integrates fields using novel explore‐exploit

Motivated Moral Reasoning
Moral judgments are important, intuitive, and complex. These factors make moral judgment particularly fertile ground for motivated reasoning. This chapter reviews research (both our own and that of others) examining two general pathways by which motivational forces can alter the moral implications of an act: by affecting perceptions of an actor’s moral accountability for the act, and by influen...
متن کاملMotivating Discounts: Price-Motivated Reasoning
The behavioral implications of relatively low prices and of discounts have been viewed from two opposing perspectives. From an attribution perspective, a large discount signals low quality and decreases the overall appeal of the product, but from a motivational account, a large discount seems attractive and increases the overall appeal of the product. We demonstrate the existence of both accoun...
متن کاملThe case for motivated reasoning.
It is proposed that motivation may affect reasoning through reliance on a biased set of cognitive processes--that is, strategies for accessing, constructing, and evaluating beliefs. The motivation to be accurate enhances use of those beliefs and strategies that are considered most appropriate, whereas the motivation to arrive at particular conclusions enhances use of those that are considered m...

Reflection-in-action and motivated reasoning
Reflection in design pedagogy still has a limited theoretical basis, being based largely on historical precedent and the more recent work of Donald Schön. Discipline criticisms of reflection in design pedagogies and curricula have yet to be addressed fully and, compared to other disciplines, design has relatively little critical debate around the theory and practice of reflection. Research in o...
